FCC-ee physics workshops at CERN

Two workshops took place at CERN on 2-3 February and 4-5 February 2016 to discuss the progress and the roadmap of the FCC-ee physics and experiment studies. The FCC-study has an emphasis on hadron-hadron and lepton-lepton colliders as well as a hadron-lepton scenario and includes the design and optimization of detectors to copy with the physics programme of these machines.

In a recent publication in NATURE, ISOLDE collaboration presented new measurements of magic numbers. The large and unexpected increase of the size of the neutron-rich calcium isotopes beyond N = 28 opens new intriguing questions on the evolution of nuclear sizes away from stability, which are of importance for our understanding of neutron-rich atomic nuclei.

AWAKE, an accelerator R&D experiment.

AWAKE is an accelerator R&D experiment. In the coming years the AWAKE experiment should pave the way to understanding the physics and potential of proton-driven plasma wakefield acceleration for future accelerators.

The CLIC workshop 2016 covered Accelerator as well as the Detector and Physics studies, discussing CLIC's present status and programme for the coming years.

CAST in Time – The Quest for Axions and Chameleons

14 years after its first data taking the future of CAST is as bright as on the first day and investigating the dark side of the universe, may it be axions or chameleons opens a door to possible surprises which could be waiting around the next corner.

Two of the LHC experiments, ATLAS and ALICE, recently announced winners of the “ATLAS PhD Grant” and “ALICE Thesis Award” schemes. The prizes aim to foster healthy competition between young members of the two collaborators and acknowledge the hard efforts of the winners but also of those who were considered for these awards.

Interview with James Peebles

An interview with Jim Peebles, one of the world's foremost cosmologists and an emeritus professor at Princeton University, where since 1984 he was the Albert Einstein Professor of Science. With Robert Dicke he predicted the existence of the cosmic background radiation while he largely contributed to establishing the big bang model and furthering our understanding of the universe.

 

After almost ten years under the umbrella of the PH department, TH becomes again a department. In 2005, it was incorporated into the CERN Physics Department as the "Theory Unit". In 2016 it once again became an independent department, the "Theoretical Physics Department"
