CERN Accelerating science

Editorial - March 2015

by Livio Mapelli

Dear Colleagues,

Excitement is building as the restart of the LHC approaches, with first beam interactions seen during injection tests.  But as you can read elsewhere in this edition of the newsletter, an intermittent short-circuit in one sector needs to be resolved before beams can circulate, which may result in a short delay – not surprising for a project of this complexity. Nevertheless, when beams are back, the Run Coordinators of the experiments will be very busy, and for this and the next issue we have articles focussing on their work.

The fixed target programme has already started producing physics results, and some of those are also reported here, along with articles concerning safety, which must always be our highest priority.

I wish you pleasant reading.

Livio Mapelli,
PH Department Head
