Exotic radioactive molecules could reveal physics beyond the Standard Model

ISOLDE, CERN’s radioactive beam facility enables the first spectroscopic study of radium monofluoride (RaF); a radioactive molecule tht can be used to probe new physics beyond the Standard Model. 

 

First measurements of charge radii of the Cu isotopes using ISOLDE's Collinear Resonance Ionisation Spectroscopy (CRIS) method shed more light on one of the most pertinent open problems in nuclear theory.

 

PUMA: Exploring exotic nuclear phenomena with antimatter

The proposed experiment would for the first time transport antiprotons trapped at AD/ELENA to ISOLDE where they will be used for nuclear physics experiments.

 

Finding the best candidates for atomic EDM searches

Using the HIE-ISOLDE accelerator, researchers concluded that radon atoms provide less favourable conditions for the enhancement of a measurable atomic EDM than radium.

 

Last week, the new CERN-MEDICIS facility has produced radioisotopes that will be used primarily for hospitals and research centres in Switzerland and across Europe. 

On 28th September, the ISOLDE Collaboration celebrated the completion of stage 1 of the HIE-ISOLDE project, which opens up new physics opportunities for radioactive ion beam experiments at CERN.

In a recent publication in NATURE, ISOLDE collaboration presented new measurements of magic numbers. The large and unexpected increase of the size of the neutron-rich calcium isotopes beyond N = 28 opens new intriguing questions on the evolution of nuclear sizes away from stability, which are of importance for our understanding of neutron-rich atomic nuclei.
