LHC Restart 2016

Following the 2016 restart of the LHC, we have asked the run coordinators of the four largest LHC experiments — ALICE, ATLAS, CMS and LHCb — to share a few words with us about the first data taking. Their broad physics programme will be complemented by the measurements of three smaller experiments (TOTEM, LHCf and MoEDAL) and may hold the key to new physics.

HIE-ISOLDE: Stage 1 fully installed

The High Intensity and Energy at ISOLDE, HIE-ISOLDE, project intends to improve the experimental capabilities at ISOLDE over a wide front. The impact of the increase of energy and intensity of the injectors together with a number of improvements in several aspects of the secondary beam properties are addressed in the HIE-ISOLDE Design Study.

Design study of a twin solenoid and dipoles detector magnet system for the FCC study

The Future Circular Collider study for hadron-hadron collisions (FCC-hh) foresees a collision energy of 100 TeV. This means that the detector magnets have to provide strong magnetic fields over longer distances compared to the LHC experiments. One of the conceptual detector magnet designs currently being developed for FCC-hh is the “Twin Solenoid”, which features two concentric superconducting solenoids.

Recent results from the CLOUD experiment

CERN’s  CLOUD  experiment publish new paper that sheds new light on cloud formation. It shows that biogenic vapours emitted by trees and oxidised in the atmosphere have a significant impact on the formation of clouds, thus helping to cool the planet.

To reduce CERNs impact on the environment the EP-DT group is working on improving the efficiency of the gas usage in the LHC experiments and on the development of new more environmentally friendly gases for future detectors.

Following his inspiring talk during the 2016 FCC Week, we discuss with Gian Giudice about the LHC results, the present global landscape in particle physics and his view about future developments in the field.

CMS releases new data

The CMS collaboration has made 300 TB of high-quality data from the LHC available to the public through the CERN Open Data Portal.

It seems that Europe really exists, it is not just a collection of countries that happen to be adjacent on the map. It means something to be a European, at least in the context of scientific co-operation, without in any way lessening one’s identity as British (or English, Welsh, or Scottish for that matter). Hopefully we can now make that work in other fields as well.
